Commonwealth Games Look to India for Revival

The 23rd Commonwealth Games concluded in Glasgow with a vibrant closing ceremony, marking the end of a streamlined edition of the event and shifting attention to India, which will host the 2030 Games in Ahmedabad. After recent hosting challenges and concerns over the event’s relevance, organizers see India’s edition as a major opportunity to restore stability and strengthen the future of the Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow hosted a reduced version of the Games featuring 10 sports, using existing venues and operating at roughly one-third of the cost of the 2014 edition. Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir said the Ahmedabad Games are expected to feature 15–17 sports, while Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the event would showcase India’s ability to organize world-class sporting competitions as it pursues its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Although several top international athletes skipped this year’s competition, the Commonwealth Games continued to provide a platform for emerging talent and highlighted the successful integration of para sports. Organizers also praised Glasgow’s cost-effective model, saying future editions can be more flexible, sustainable, and tailored to the unique character of each host nation.
