Chennai Petroleum Plans 33% Refinery Capacity Expansion to 280,000 Barrels Per Day
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL), a state-run Indian oil company, has announced plans to expand its refining capacity by nearly one-third to 280,000 barrels per day. The company revealed the expansion strategy in its 2025-26 annual report, aiming to strengthen its position in India’s growing energy sector.
CPCL currently operates the 210,000 barrels-per-day Manali refinery in Tamil Nadu. The company, along with its parent firm Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is also planning to reconfigure the proposed Cauvery Basin refinery project to increase its petrochemical production capabilities.
The company has also entered the fuel retailing business and opened its first retail outlet in March. CPCL plans to establish around 300 fuel outlets across India, although it has not announced specific timelines for the refinery expansion or retail network growth.
