Centre Doubles 5-kg LPG Cylinder Allocation for Migrant Workers Amid Supply Concerns
The Centre has doubled the allocation limit of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant workers in response to supply-chain pressures triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict. These cylinders, distributed exclusively to migrant labourers through oil marketing companies (OMCs), will now be supplied via state governments and their food and civil supplies departments. Petroleum Secretary Dr. Niraj Mittal has informed all states and Union Territories about the revised arrangement, which aims to ensure uninterrupted access to cooking fuel for vulnerable populations.
The enhanced allocation is based on the average daily supply recorded during March 2–3, 2026, with the daily quantity for migrant workers now doubled beyond the earlier 20% cap. Meanwhile, BharatGas has assured that its 5-kg mini cylinders remain widely available across India through authorised distributors, requiring only valid ID proof for purchase. The company also highlighted a return policy allowing customers to reclaim 50% of the cylinder’s value within five years, making it a practical option for migrant workers.
The move comes amid concerns over LPG availability linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for India’s energy imports. While reports suggested migrant workers were leaving cities due to shortages, the oil ministry clarified that LPG supplies remain stable and uninterrupted. States have been advised to manage targeted distribution based on local needs in coordination with OMCs, even as the government continues to ramp up commercial LPG allocations to support industries and essential services.
