UPI QR Codes Surge 15% in 2025, Boosting Digital Payments Ecosystem
India’s digital payments landscape continued its rapid expansion in 2025, with UPI QR codes growing by 15% to reach 731.38 million, up from 633.44 million in the previous year, according to a Worldline report. This sharp rise highlights the increasing adoption of QR-based payments among merchants, strengthening the reach of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) across urban and rural markets alike.
The growth in QR infrastructure coincided with a significant jump in transaction volumes on the UPI platform, which recorded a 33% increase to 228.5 billion transactions in 2025, compared to 172.2 billion in 2024. Meanwhile, point-of-sale (POS) terminals also expanded at a similar pace, rising 15% to 11.48 million units, reflecting a broader shift toward digital payment acceptance across multiple channels.
Despite the surge in usage, the average UPI ticket size declined to ₹1,314 in 2025 from ₹1,437 a year earlier, indicating higher adoption for smaller, everyday transactions. In contrast, credit and debit cards continued to dominate higher-value payments, with average ticket sizes of ₹4,150 and ₹3,360 respectively, underscoring differing consumer behavior across payment modes.
