Bumrah Backed Despite Wicket Drought as Mumbai Indians Struggle Continues

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has defended star pacer Jasprit Bumrah after he went five consecutive matches without a wicket in the ongoing Indian Premier League season. Mumbai slumped to their fourth straight defeat following a seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings, leaving the five-time champions in ninth place. Jayawardene noted that Bumrah has been bowling well, but opposing teams have adopted a cautious approach against him, choosing instead to target other bowlers in the lineup.

The former Sri Lankan captain admitted that Mumbai have struggled to create pressure during the powerplay and lacked penetration across varying conditions. He highlighted that Bumrah was unlucky not to pick up wickets despite delivering quality spells, including an impressive opening against Shreyas Iyer, who went on to score a match-winning 66 off 35 balls. Punjab Kings comfortably chased down a target of 196 with 21 balls remaining, underlining Mumbai’s bowling concerns.

Captain Hardik Pandya acknowledged the team’s poor run and hinted at potential changes to arrest the slide. He stressed the need for accountability and difficult decision-making, stating that while Mumbai have shown flashes of strong performance, they have not been clinical enough at crucial moments. With the season slipping away, the team faces mounting pressure to quickly turn things around.
