Codex Evolves into Full-Scale Development Assistant with Automation, Memory, and Computer Control
OpenAI has unveiled a major update to its Codex platform, significantly expanding its capabilities beyond code generation into a comprehensive assistant across the entire software development lifecycle. The latest version introduces features such as computer control, automation, memory, and deeper integrations with developer tools, enabling users to manage tasks from start to finish. With the addition of over 90 new plugins, Codex can now connect with platforms like JIRA, GitLab, and Microsoft applications, allowing it to gather context and execute actions seamlessly across multiple tools.
A key highlight of the update is Codex’s ability to operate a user’s computer by visually interacting with the interface—clicking, typing, and navigating using its own cursor. It also supports running multiple agents simultaneously, enabling parallel task execution without interrupting ongoing workflows. The introduction of an in-app browser further enhances its functionality, allowing users to interact directly with web pages, particularly benefiting frontend and game development. Additional improvements include image generation using GPT-image-1.5, pull request reviews, multi-terminal management, SSH connectivity, and file previews for formats such as PDFs and spreadsheets.
The update also emphasizes automation and continuity through advanced memory features. Codex can now retain context from previous interactions, reuse past conversations, and schedule tasks over extended periods, helping teams maintain consistent workflows. It can automatically resume ongoing work and suggest next steps based on project history, highlighting pending actions across tools like Slack, Gmail, and Notion. Currently rolling out to desktop users signed in with ChatGPT, the computer control feature is initially available on macOS, with broader access and enhanced personalization features expected for Enterprise, Edu, and regional users in the near future.
