Bihar Prisoner Swallows Mobile Phone During Inspection

An official stated on Monday that a prisoner at the Gopalganj district jail in Bihar allegedly swallowed a cell phone during check-in out of fear of being discovered by guards.

On Saturday during an inspection, the prisoner Qaishar Ali ingested the phone. Nevertheless, the issue was discovered on Sunday after Ali experienced severe stomach pain.

“The prisoner informed the jail authorities and narrated the sequence of events. He was immediately rushed to Gopalganj district hospital where the x-ray of the inmate revealed the presence of a foreign particle in his abdomen,” Manoj Kumar, Gopalganj jail superintendent told PTI on Monday.

Doctor Salam Siddiqui at the hospital’s emergency room said, “Due to stomach pain, the prisoner was sent to the hospital. His stomach was given an x-ray, and the investigation revealed the presence of foreign objects. A thorough investigation is required.”

The hospital established a medical board, and the prisoner was sent to Patna Medical College and Hospital for additional care.

On January 17, 2020, Ali was detained by Gopalganj police in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act). He has spent the last three years behind bars.

Concerns about the qualifications of security staff have been raised by inmates’ use of cell phones inside Bihar jails. During raids conducted in jails around the state in March 2021, over 35 cellphones, seven sim cards, and 17 cellphone chargers were taken. In addition to various other jails in the state, raids were performed at Katihar, Buxar, Gopalganj, Nalanda, Hajipur, and Ara.
