Bangladesh-Pakistan Defence Tie-Up Raises Concerns for India

Strategic affairs expert Sushant Sareen has warned that a potential defence pact between Pakistan and Bangladesh could pose a significant threat to India. Sareen highlighted reports suggesting that Pakistani officials are influencing decision-making within Bangladesh, raising the possibility of Pakistani military presence or security assistance in Dhaka. He emphasized that such a tie-up could effectively turn Bangladesh into an outpost capable of hostile actions against India, forcing New Delhi to rethink its strategic plans in the region.

According to reports, Pakistan is seeking a NATO-style defence agreement with Bangladesh, similar to the deal it signed with Saudi Arabia earlier this year. The proposed pact would enable intelligence sharing, joint military exercises, and potential arms agreements between Islamabad and Dhaka. While details about nuclear cooperation remain unclear, the agreement is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s strategic positioning against India.

Sareen further noted that India’s current approach toward Bangladesh might reflect “strategic paralysis” rather than restraint, suggesting that New Delhi needs to reassess its regional strategy. With Bangladesh elections approaching in the next two months, the pace of the proposed pact is expected to accelerate, intensifying geopolitical concerns in South Asia.
