Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, an Indian teenager, stunned world champion Magnus Carlsen for the second time this year, winning the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament on Friday.
The 16-year-old, who also won their match at the Airthings Masters in February, took advantage of Carlsen’s one-move blunder in the closing stages to keep his hopes alive for a spot in the knockout stages.
Praggnanandhaa said this week that he was in the middle of his school exams but couldn’t pass up the chance to compete against such a strong field.
After winning the Reykjavik Open last month and finishing third at the La Roda Open, the Chennai prodigy is having a strong season.
