Apple Challenges India Antitrust Push

Apple has intensified its legal battle with Competition Commission of India (CCI), accusing the watchdog of overstepping its authority in an ongoing antitrust case tied to the iPhone app ecosystem. In a recent court filing, Apple argued that the regulator is acting prematurely by demanding financial data while the company is still challenging India’s penalty calculation framework in court. The matter is now before the Delhi High Court, where Apple has sought urgent intervention to pause proceedings.

The dispute escalated after the CCI ordered Apple to submit detailed financial records—typically required to determine penalties—and scheduled a final hearing for May 21. Apple has resisted, claiming the regulator should wait until the legal challenge to the antitrust rules is resolved. The company warned it could face penalties of up to $38 billion if the case proceeds under the current framework.

India remains a crucial growth market for Apple, where its iPhone market share has risen to about 9%. However, Apple continues to argue it is not dominant in the market, pointing instead to Google’s Android ecosystem as the primary player. The case is part of a broader global wave of antitrust scrutiny facing Apple over its app marketplace practices.
