Amma’s AIADMK likely to support NDA

Offering strong voice to the central government in the Upper House, J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK is planning to support NDA government from outside. Though BJP is a strong force in the lower house, the Lok Sabha, it is relatively week in terms of members in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House. It makes it difficult for them to pass bills in the Rajya Sabha within expected time limit. It has even delayed the most-awaited ‘Goods and Service tax bill’ conceived by the ruling BJP-led government. Now, with the support of the AIADMK the centre can easily pass those bills if they back the alliance.AIADMK is the third largest party in Lok sabha with around thirty nine members. Moreover, they have nearly twelve members in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, instead of appointing congress member as deputy speaker in the Lower House, the NDA preferred to induct Amma’s loyalist, M Thambidurai, in that position. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu government needs strong centre support to maintain steady flow of the welfare goods, which is the main political tool to woo the Dravidian party’s vote bank.Experts say that a virtual alliance between the rightist centre and the welfare south will help both parties extensively. The south, particularly Tamil Nadu, needs large chunk of funds to fulfil poll promises as they are extremely conscious to maintain the welfare schemes. Reports say that the last-minute freebees offer made by the ruling TN government has helped Amma to secure a second consecutive victory. Unlike that of West Bengal, the Muslim community is not a vital electoral force in the state so AIADMK can freely decide on whether the Dravidian party should support rightists.
