After winning in Punjab, Bhagwant Mann’s mother says he’s on the right track
Harpal Kaur, Bhagwant Mann’s mother, said on Thursday that her son is on the right track after the Aam Aadmi Party won the Punjab assembly elections. Mann is the AAP’s candidate for chief minister in Dhuri.
In an interview with ANI, Kaur said, “I’m overjoyed. His father must have been overjoyed to see his son rise to the position of Chief Minister… He was on the right track before, and he is on the right track now…” Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann will be sworn in as Punjab’s Chief Minister in Bhagat Singh’s hometown of Khatkarkalan, rather than at the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh. “I will take my oath as Chief Minister in Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkarkalan, not at the Raj Bhawan,” Mann told reporters in Sangrur.
On January 18, Mann was named the AAP’s chief ministerial candidate. The decision was made, according to the party, after telephonic polls were conducted to select the chief ministerial candidate.
Mann began his career as a comedian after being born in the Satoj village of Sangrur in 1973. He began his political career in 2011 as a member of Manpreet Singh Badal’s Punjab Peoples Party. He ran for the Lehragaga constituency in the 2012 elections but lost.
In 2014, he became a member of the Aam Aadmi Party and ran for the Lok Sabha seat of Sangrur. When he defeated veteran Punjab leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who was then with Shiromani Akali Dal, his prominence in Punjab politics grew (SAD).
Since 2014, Mann has been elected to the Punjab Lok Sabha seat of Sangrur for two consecutive terms. His satires on the TV show ‘Jugnu Mast Mast’ made him famous. He also appeared in a number of other comedic shows. If AAP wins Punjab, it will be the party’s first victory in the state, and a significant improvement over its second-place finish in the 2017 elections, when it came in second to Congress.
