Adani Group Pumps ₹7,000 Crore Into Ammo Expansion, Plans Major Boost in Production Capacity
The Adani Group has earmarked ₹7,000 crore to rapidly scale its presence in India’s ammunition industry, with its 500-acre Kanpur-based facility at the centre of this expansion. Adani Defence currently manufactures 150 million rounds of small-calibre ammunition annually, covering multiple dimensions, and now plans to triple this output to 500 million rounds per year as part of a major capacity boost.
Alongside scaling production, Adani Defence is preparing to expand into medium and large calibre ammunition, with the large-calibre line expected to become operational within months and the medium-calibre plant set for completion by January 2027. The company, however, faces a major industry-wide challenge: a severe shortage of explosive materials in India. With PSU Munitions India Ltd unable to meet full domestic demand due to limited capacity and export obligations, Adani has begun integrating more production processes internally and securing supply agreements abroad.
Adani’s defence ambitions also extend into advanced warfare technologies. Highlighting global conflicts from Gaza to Ukraine, the Group emphasised the need for offensive capabilities such as drones, which it is manufacturing in Hyderabad. It has also strengthened partnerships with DRDO and is collaborating with firms in France, Israel, Russia, and more to bring cutting-edge defence technology to India through co-development, tech-transfer, and production partnerships.
