Adani Enterprises to Launch World’s Largest Copper Smelter in India Within Weeks

Adani Enterprises Ltd is set to begin operations at its massive Kutch Copper smelting complex in India within the next four weeks, according to Felipe Williams, the company’s head of metals. Speaking at an International Copper Association conference in Santiago, Williams revealed that the facility, touted as the world’s largest metallurgical complex for copper and other metals, has already begun commissioning, with initial anode production underway.
The launch marks a significant step in India’s push to meet soaring domestic copper demand, driven by industrial growth and the energy transition. This project is part of the smelter’s first phase, with environmental clearances already in place for future capacity expansions. However, Williams acknowledged current market challenges, including negative treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) due to tight copper supply affecting Asian smelters.
Despite the tough market conditions, Adani views the smelter as a strategic long-term investment. Copper prices rebounded sharply on Thursday, gaining 3.8% to $8,939 per metric ton on the London Metal Exchange, following a temporary 90-day pause in global tariffs by the U.S. administration, offering a glimmer of hope for smelters facing squeezed margins.
