India and US Nearing Trade Pact Amid Section 301 Tariff Negotations

A U.S. delegation led by Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch has arrived in New Delhi for a three-day round of crucial negotiations. The bilateral talks are aimed at finalizing an initial trade understanding reached in February. Negotiations had previously slowed after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff measures, prompting the administration to launch Section 301 investigations alongside a blanket 10% tariff.

An Indian government source revealed that New Delhi plans to directly address the impact of this Section 301 probe during the meetings. India’s primary goal is to secure “fair, equitable, and balanced” terms, specifically seeking relief from the resulting tariffs. To strengthen its position in global supply chains, India is pushing for preferential tariff rates that would give it a distinct competitive advantage over rival manufacturing hubs in South and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

While India’s trade ministry and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative have not officially commented, progress is signaling a positive direction. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to visit India once the broad contours of the deal are settled. Furthermore, U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently indicated that the final agreement is expected to be wrapped up within the next few weeks or months.
