India Falls to 7th in Market Cap Rankings
India’s stock market has slipped to seventh place globally by market capitalization after South Korea overtook it, driven by a strong rally in AI-related semiconductor stocks. South Korea’s combined market value reached $5.01 trillion, surpassing India’s $4.85 trillion, while Taiwan had already moved ahead of India last month.
Indian equities have faced pressure from weak corporate earnings, heavy foreign investor selling, and limited exposure to the global AI boom. The Nifty 50 and Sensex have declined more than 10% this year, while foreign investors have withdrawn a record $26.4 billion from Indian stocks in 2026, exceeding last year’s outflows.
In contrast, South Korea and Taiwan have benefited from surging demand for AI and semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Despite the setback, market experts believe India could still gain from the AI revolution through investments in supporting infrastructure, including power, cooling systems, and data centers that form the backbone of the AI ecosystem.
