X to Launch Standalone Messaging App ‘XChat’ with Encryption and Advanced Privacy Features
X is set to expand its ecosystem with the launch of a new standalone messaging app, XChat, for iPhone and iPad users. According to its App Store listing, the app is currently available for pre-order and is scheduled to roll out on April 17. The move signals a major shift from X’s existing in-app direct messaging system, positioning XChat as a dedicated platform for private communication with enhanced functionality and privacy controls.
Unlike earlier expectations of an upgraded DM feature within the main app, XChat has been developed as a separate service. Reports from Engadget clarify that the app is not connected to older IRC-based services of a similar name but is instead built exclusively for X users. Back in mid-2025, X chief Elon Musk had hinted at a redesigned messaging system with encryption and a new architecture, but the company has now opted for a standalone approach.
XChat will introduce a range of privacy-focused and user-friendly features, including end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and screenshot blocking. Users will also be able to edit or delete messages after sending them, while group chats can support up to 481 members. The app will further offer cross-device calling, expanding beyond text-based communication. Available on devices running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later, XChat will notably be ad-free and will not track users, reflecting a strong emphasis on secure and private messaging experiences.
