₹12 Crore Cyber Scam in Pune: Elderly Doctor Duped by Fake Investment Scheme
In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a 75-year-old doctor from Pune lost over ₹12 crore after being lured into a fraudulent investment scheme that promised to double his wealth in just 11 days. According to reports, the scam began with a message offering lucrative stock market returns, after which the victim was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘VIP Stock 24’. The group appeared credible, sharing fabricated success stories and investment tips, eventually convincing the doctor to trust the scheme.
The fraudsters then directed him to use a trading application posing as a reputed international firm. Influenced by fake profit figures displayed on the app, the victim transferred ₹12.31 crore in multiple transactions. When he showed hesitation, the scammers resorted to intimidation tactics, including threats of property seizure and emotional coercion. The deception continued until the victim eventually realized he had been defrauded.
Legal experts warn that while fraud techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the core tactic remains unchanged—enticing victims with promises of unrealistically high returns. They stress the urgent need for greater public awareness, stricter enforcement, and basic verification practices. Authorities advise citizens to remain cautious of “too good to be true” offers, verify investment platforms, avoid acting on unsolicited financial advice, and protect sensitive financial information to prevent falling prey to such scams.
