Trump Claims India Will Cut Tariffs on US Goods, Trade Deal Expected Soon

US President Donald Trump has reiterated that India is willing to slash 100 percent of its tariffs on American goods, suggesting a trade agreement between the two nations is imminent. Speaking to Fox News, Trump described India as “one of the highest tariff nations in the world” and claimed that New Delhi has made a generous offer to facilitate US trade access, although he emphasized he is “not in a rush” to finalise the deal.
In response, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar maintained that trade talks are ongoing and emphasized that any agreement must be “mutually beneficial.” He noted that complex negotiations are underway and highlighted that “nothing is decided till everything is,” reinforcing India’s position on safeguarding national interests in trade agreements.
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in Washington, engaging with US officials including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and USTR Jamieson Greer. India is seeking tariff reductions for key exports such as textiles, leather, gems, and agricultural products, while the US is pushing for duty cuts on electric vehicles, wines, dairy, and other goods.
