Tibet’s Elected Leader Penpa Tsering Urges Peaceful Coexistence with Neighbours
Tibet’s elected leader, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, drew a powerful analogy while discussing autonomy, saying that “Tibet doesn’t have Hanuman to lift it up and place it near the US,” stressing the need for peaceful coexistence with neighbouring countries. Speaking at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics, Tsering said Tibet’s geography makes it naturally isolated, with its high altitude and rugged terrain preventing easy access both in and out of the region.
Highlighting Tibet’s historical harmony with neighbouring peoples, Tsering said the region’s unique geography, rich Buddhist heritage, and environmental significance make it vital for Asia. He called Tibet the “roof of the world” and the “water tower of Asia,” as it is the source of many major rivers in the continent.
However, Tsering expressed deep concern over China’s assimilation policies, noting that more than one million Tibetan children are in boarding schools where they are separated from their language, culture, and families. He said the Chinese have “struck at the very root of Tibetan identity,” warning that continued cultural suppression could erase Tibetan heritage over the coming decades.
