“This Is New India,” says actor R Madhavan at the Cannes Film Festival

Actor R Madhavan, who is in Cannes with a team representing India, praised the success of India’s “micro-economy” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. He said that at first, the world was sceptical, believing that digitisation would be a “big disaster” in a country where farmers might not know how to use a smartphone or handle their accounting, but that “the whole story changed” in a few years and India became one of the largest users of micro-economy in India. He explained that it occurred because the farmers did not need to be taught how to use a phone to determine whether or not they had received the funds.

“That is new India,” he said, referring to the term often used by the Centre to project an image of change that the BJP-led union government has ushered in.
“The PM introduced the micro-economy and digital currency when he first took office. There was a worldwide uproar among economists who claimed that it would not work, that it would be disastrous “In a video clip shared by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, who is leading the Indian delegation to Cannes, he can be heard saying.

Mr Madhavan was most likely referring to the government’s Direct Benefit Transfer programme, which is part of the government’s aggressive push toward a digital economy that is less reliant on cash.

This year’s Marche Du Films has named India the Country of Honour (Cannes Film Market). Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur led the Indian delegation. He shared the red carpet with R Madhavan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Ricky Kej, Shekhar Kapur, Prasoon Joshi, and others at Cannes 2022.

Mr Thakur had previously used social media to share photos of the Indian delegation at the prestigious film festival.

“The largest-ever Indian delegation climbed up the iconic stairs of Palais des Festivals on #Cannes2022 opening night, shining brightest on the #RedCarpet. India is preparing for the opening of its pavilion at the 75th Cannes Film Festival today “On May 18, he tweeted pictures along with his message.
