Tesla Launches Six-Seater Model Y L in India to Expand Premium EV Lineup
Tesla has introduced a new six-seater version of its Model Y, called the Model Y L, in India on Wednesday. The launch marks an expansion of its limited lineup in the country after entering the market less than a year ago. The new variant features an extended wheelbase and is priced at 6.2 million rupees ($66,324), according to the company’s website.
The Model Y L sits between Tesla’s higher-end and more affordable variants, targeting India’s growing demand for larger, premium sport utility vehicles. This trend has been driven by consumer preference for feature-rich cars, including touchscreen systems and sunroofs. Tesla originally entered India with its imported Model Y, but high import tariffs of around 100% have pushed its pricing into a niche segment.
Currently, Tesla’s Model Y range in India includes a rear-wheel-drive version priced at about 6 million rupees and a long-range variant at 6.8 million rupees. Despite the high cost, the company argues that lower running expenses such as fuel and maintenance could help offset a portion of the purchase price over several years. The Model Y L has already been introduced in China but is yet to launch in the United States.
