Technical Glitches Disrupt GSTR-1 Filing Ahead of January 11 Deadline

Businesses across India are facing challenges as the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) portal encounters technical issues, delaying the filing of GSTR-1 returns for December 2024. With the January 11 deadline fast approaching, taxpayers have raised concerns about the portal’s unavailability, which has also hindered access to past data and the ability to respond to notices. GSTN has assured users that the portal is expected to be operational by noon on January 10, 2025, but the disruption has already created significant inconvenience for taxpayers and professionals alike.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has not yet announced an extension to the GSTR-1 filing deadline. However, GSTN has submitted an incident report requesting an extension, with industry experts suggesting January 13, 2025, as a feasible new deadline. The issue is particularly pressing as January 11 falls on a Saturday, a non-working day for many multinational companies. An extension would provide relief to businesses grappling with the delays caused by the portal’s downtime.

Delays in filing GSTR-1 have a cascading impact, as the data is essential for generating GSTR-2B, which allows buyers to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC). Without timely ITC claims, businesses could face cash flow disruptions, having to pay GST liabilities in cash until credits are reflected in subsequent periods. Stakeholders now await swift action from CBIC to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth tax compliance in the future.
