Tamil politicians urge Sri Lankan prez to relook his controversial move
A prominent Tamil political party, Tamil National Alliance, has urged the Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena, to relook the controversial move that jolted the country’s political platform violently. Few weeks has faced since Mr Sirisen undemocratically replaced a democratically elected leader with a man who was considered as the rival of democracy, Mahinda Rajapaksa the Sir Lankan president has now left with no option but to admit his wrongs and let the democracy take its normal course.
Recently, the president has met the representatives of the TNA and the party of his prime rival Ranil Wickremesinghe, United National Front to discuss the situation. In that meeting, he has requested all members to accept his decision to end the stalemate. No member has paid attention to the president’s plea.
It is the rift created between the legislature and executive that worries the president the most. He, like many, considers it as a threat to democracy.
No country respects a country whose ruler is not accepted by its own lawmakers. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka is now one such nation, which is ruled by a person who is not supported by its own parliament.
Day by day, the pressure over the president to end the statement is increasing. If the country’s judicial system also rejects the president’s decision following the path of legislature, no one can help him.
It is clear that India is closely monitoring the developments in the Island country.
