Steve McCurry’s photo of an Afghan refugee has fans asking again, “Is that Amitabh Bachchan?”
Photographer Steve McCurry frequently has his images go viral and spark discussions about important global issues. Bollywood fans were captivated by a snapshot he reshared on World Refugee Day after seeing the startling similarity between his subject and legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan.
The photographer recently reposted a shot of an Afghan refugee who was residing in Pakistan in honour of World Refugee Day. McCurry commented on Instagram, “This photo of Shabuz, an Afghan refugee residing in Pakistan, reminds us of the millions of displaced peoples around the world.”
An elderly man wearing a white safa over his head and one eye is depicted in the portrait. Their precarious situation is highlighted by the image of the elderly man with a beard dressed in a rough manner and sporting what looks to be scratched spectacles. While most expressed sympathy for the immigrant in the image, they couldn’t help but notice how much the man resembled Amitabh Bachchan.
“The extraordinary humanitarian crises around the world have led to the most displaced people ever. From their homes, 100 million people have been uprooted, he wrote. He continued, “We must all step up our assistance for those who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in perilous and vulnerable situations.
In actuality, this has happened previously. Prior to the release of Thugs of Hindostan in 2018, which also starred Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Katrina Kaif, the image went viral online. At the time, a lot of social media posts that went viral claimed it was Bachchan’s appearance from the movie. Later, it was discovered that the picture was actually one McCurry took in Baluchistan years earlier.
Even after all these years, the situation remained the same; this time, the image reminded them of Bachchan’s appearance in his 2020 hit Gulabo Sitabo. It appears that every time the image is posted again, new viewers find it and wonder if it is Bachchan from a recent project.
