Social Media Backlash Erupts Over Asha Sharma’s Appointment as Microsoft Gaming CEO
The appointment of Indian-origin executive Asha Sharma as CEO of Microsoft Gaming has sparked a wave of toxic reactions across social media platforms. Within hours of the announcement, posts on X and other networks questioned her professional background, gender and Indian origin, with some critics portraying the leadership change as part of a broader corporate “agenda.” Several comments also raised doubts about her gaming credentials, citing her previous role in artificial intelligence initiatives at Microsoft.
Microsoft confirmed that Sharma will succeed Phil Spencer, who is retiring after nearly four decades with the company. Announcing the decision, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed confidence in Sharma’s leadership and emphasized the strategic importance of gaming within the company’s consumer ambitions. Sharma previously led development efforts around Microsoft Copilot and is widely regarded within the firm as an AI specialist.
In her first message following the announcement, Sharma sought to reassure the Xbox community, pledging to recommit to long-time fans while expanding gaming beyond traditional consoles into cloud services, subscriptions and AI-driven experiences. Despite the online backlash, Microsoft has indicated that its long-term gaming strategy remains unchanged, positioning the leadership transition as part of a broader evolution of the business rather than a departure from its core vision.
