SEBI Penalises Zee Entertainment, Punit Goenka and Subhash Chandra
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL), its CEO Punit Goenka, and Founder-Chairman Emeritus Subhash Chandra have been penalised by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for alleged violations of securities laws. The regulator imposed a total penalty of ₹14.8 million and barred Goenka and Chandra from accessing the securities market for one year. ZEEL has also been barred from the securities market for two months.
According to SEBI, its investigation began after missing title deeds of a company property came to light. The regulator found that ZEEL-owned land had been used as collateral for loans taken by entities linked to a major shareholder without obtaining the necessary approvals. SEBI also stated that these arrangements were not disclosed to the company’s board, audit committee, shareholders, or investors.
As part of the order, Goenka was fined ₹5.8 million, Chandra ₹6 million, and ZEEL ₹3 million. Zee Entertainment operates popular television channels including Zee TV and Zee Cinema, along with the streaming platform Zee5. Earlier this year, the company also secured the broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India.
