Sarvam Co-Founder Warns India Against AI Dependence
Sarvam co-founder Vivek Raghavan has warned that India risks becoming a “digital colony” if it continues to depend on foreign artificial intelligence technologies. Speaking to students in Gwalior, he urged young people to take an active role in shaping India’s AI future. Drawing on his experience with the Aadhaar project, Raghavan highlighted the country’s ability to build large-scale digital systems and stressed the need to develop homegrown AI models and computing infrastructure.
Raghavan emphasised that India must retain control over its data and develop AI solutions that serve its diverse population. He said AI should be accessible to everyone, including people who speak Indian languages, and highlighted its potential to improve access to education, healthcare, banking, legal assistance and government services. He also cautioned that AI could transform or eliminate certain jobs, making continuous learning and reskilling essential.
Encouraging students to experiment with AI and remain curious, Raghavan said asking the right questions would become increasingly important as technology advances. He also stressed the need to address challenges such as fraud, misinformation and security threats. Linking India’s technological progress to its ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047, he urged young people to contribute to building AI systems by Indians, for India and the world.
