Sarvam AI to Launch Voice-First Sovereign AI App for Multilingual India
Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI is set to roll out a voice-enabled sovereign AI application tailored to India’s multilingual population, CEO Pratyush Kumar said in an interview with Business Today. Speaking with Group Editor Siddharth Zarabi, Kumar explained that the app will allow users to interact with a locally trained large language model through both text and speech in English and multiple Indian languages. The platform is positioned as a mass-market, India-built alternative to Western AI assistants.
Kumar emphasized that consumer adoption, rather than just model development, will determine India’s AI leadership. Calling India a “voice-first nation,” he noted that typing in Indian languages remains a barrier for many users, making voice interaction a more natural and inclusive medium. The app is designed for everyday utility—enabling students to ask academic questions, farmers to inquire about government schemes, and citizens to conduct local searches such as finding nearby services.
The announcement follows Sarvam AI’s launch of its open-source models, Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, at the India AI Impact Summit. Trained on domestic compute infrastructure with government support, the models reflect a broader push for sovereign AI capabilities. Kumar stressed that while building foundational models is important, the real challenge lies in scaling usage across India’s 1.4 billion population—moving from technological capability to widespread, practical adoption.
