Rishi Kapoor’s last film, Sharmaji Namkeen, is a bittersweet, wholesome love story

Sharmaji Namkeen, starring Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal as the titular characters, has just released its much-anticipated trailer. Rishi Kapoor’s final film promises to be a sweet, wholesome affair that tells the relatable story of a retired widower who takes on a variety of chores to keep himself busy and avoid loneliness.

He finds joy after joining a women’s kitty group and discovering a passion for cooking after several adventures. However, he is confronted with numerous difficulties, and his son does not agree with his unconventional methods.

Juhi Chawla, Suhail Nayyar, Taaruk Raina, Satish Kaushik, Sheeba Chaddha, and Isha Talwar are among the cast members of the family entertainer. Sharmaji Namkeen features two veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal – playing the same character – in a first for Hindi cinema, as Rishi Kapoor passed away before the film could be completed.

Rishi Kapoor’s son, actor Ranbir Kapoor, released a heartfelt video a day before the Sharmaji Namkeen trailer was released. “The show has to go on — you’ve all heard it, but I’ve seen my father go through it.” When Rishi became ill, Ranbir expressed concern that the film would not see the light of day. “We were concerned that the film would not be completed after his death. We considered using VFX or putting me in prosthetics to complete the role, but nothing worked out. For all of us, it was a trying time. Mr. Paresh Rawal stepped in at that point. He was extremely generous in accepting this challenge,” he said.

Sharmaji Namkeen, directed by Hitesh Bhatia and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner in collaboration with Honey Trehan and Abhishek Chaubey of MacGuffin Pictures, will premiere on Prime Video on March 31.
