Reliance Says Battery Manufacturing Plans Remain on Track Despite China Tech Curbs
India’s Reliance Industries said on Monday that its ambitious plans to build a large-scale battery storage manufacturing ecosystem remain fully on schedule, dismissing a media report suggesting delays. The company told Reuters it continues to work toward its goal of creating an integrated setup spanning battery cells to containerised energy storage systems (ESS).
The clarification followed a Bloomberg News report that Reliance had paused efforts to produce lithium-ion battery cells in India after it failed to secure technology from a Chinese partner, Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology. The report said talks fell through after Beijing tightened controls on overseas transfers of battery technology, prompting Reliance to instead focus on assembling energy storage systems.
Reliance, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, had planned to begin battery cell manufacturing this year as part of its push into clean energy and electric mobility. While Reuters could not independently verify the Bloomberg report, China’s recent export controls on lithium battery components have created fresh uncertainty for companies worldwide seeking access to critical energy storage technology.
