RBI Faces Diverging Views on Rate Decision Amid Growth Concerns

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to announce its policy decision on Friday, with contrasting opinions among economists on whether interest rates should be cut. While 62 of 67 economists in a Reuters poll anticipate no change due to surging inflation and a weakening rupee, Nomura maintains a contrarian stance, expecting a 25-basis-point rate cut. Nomura argues that inflationary pressures are largely driven by volatile food prices rather than being broad-based, with the one-year forward outlook for inflation remaining subdued.

Nomura highlights that the Indian economy’s slowing momentum, with GDP growth hitting a seven-quarter low, necessitates accommodative monetary measures. The investment bank contends that growth-focused capital inflows are vital for stabilizing the rupee, which continues to face downward pressure amid global portfolio outflows and the U.S. dollar’s rally. Without growth stability, Nomura warns, India’s external sector will remain vulnerable.

In contrast, BofA Securities believes the RBI will prioritize exchange rate stability over growth concerns, citing heavy intervention to support the rupee amid equity market outflows. The firm notes that a sharp rupee depreciation could heighten risks of financial instability and imported inflation. Despite weak growth, BofA argues, maintaining financial stability will likely dominate the central bank’s policy considerations.
