Ramesh Kumar Karnataka Assembly Speaker Resigns

Ramesh Kumar, Speaker of Karnataka Assembly Resigned on Monday with immediate effect.

According to the confidence motion Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa proved majority and the passage of the Finance Bill and appropriation bill, the Speaker informed the House about his decision. He said he was in the post of Speaker for the past 14 months and 4 days and was elected unanimously.

“I always worked as per the constitution, keeping the people also in mind. Whenever there occurs political developments, we need to take decisions carefully. We are small people and I was fortunate to occupy this chair. Our decision should never dishonor the chair,” he said.

” Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal asked me to become Speaker after the formation of coalition government, to which I agreed. That day itself Yediyurappa called and said that the BJP got S Suresh Kumar to file nomination for speaker. But BJP withdrew the nomination and unanimously elected me as the speaker. I am thankful to all of them. I thank the officials of the Speaker’s office and also thank media,” said Mr Kumar

“The root of corruption in the country is in our elections. If we speak of rooting out corruption without electoral reforms, it will only be a hypocrisy. I request the House to discuss the issue of electoral reforms and send a resolution to parliament. We should also think of the political parties,” he said.

” I have not created any history nor I have any illusion. Tenth schedule needs a total reanalyze into the matter. It is not equipped enough to prevent defections today. This House can ask Parliament to reanalyze into the matter, but not modify it. But if done so, we will be putting moral pressure for a modification.”

“But we can do what is in our range. Lokayukta Act says all elected representatives must declare their assets before June 30. But there is no penal provision. Then why to keep such a law?”

“I still stand for what I once said of Yediyurappa. As power comes, people come and hang around you. Don’t be under the illusion that they are your well-wishers,” he said
