Rahul Gandhi Arrested in Delhi Amid Protests by the Congress
In the midst of a sizable demonstration against growing costs, unemployment, and the GST increase on necessities outside the Congress party’s Delhi headquarters, several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained.
Congress members protested today in Parliament by donning black attire, under the leadership of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, against rising prices and unemployment. Today’s Rajya Sabha proceedings were suspended as Congress members erupted in outrage over the alleged abuse of government investigation agencies.
According to a statement from the party, members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and senior leaders had intended to participate in the “PM House gherao” while MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were going to hold a “Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan” from Parliament.
Prior to the Congress march, the administration issued prohibitory orders forbidding mass gatherings in specific areas of Delhi. The Delhi police had refused the Congress’ request to organise a rally in the nation’s capital, citing the constraints. The Delhi Police apprehended Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other Congress leaders when they were demonstrating outside the party’s headquarters. They are being held in Delhi’s Kingsway Camp at the Police Lines.
Rahul Gandhi stated prior to the demonstration, “Democracy is going away right before our eyes. In front of your eyes, what India has constructed brick by brick since it began nearly a century ago, is being demolished. Anyone who opposes the idea of the coming of a dictatorship is brutally attacked, imprisoned, arrested, and beaten up.”Congress has often questioned the price increase and the increase in the Goods and Service Tax (GST). On these concerns, Congress MPs have been protesting both within and outside of Parliament.
