Prada Reconnects with Indian Roots Through Kolhapuri Sandals

Italian luxury brand Prada is launching a limited-edition line of Indian-made sandals inspired by traditional Kolhapuri chappals, priced at around €750. The move comes months after the company faced criticism for showcasing similar designs at a Milan fashion show without acknowledging their Indian origins, sparking accusations of cultural appropriation.

In response to the backlash, Prada recognized the influence of Indian craftsmanship and partnered with artisan groups in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The brand plans to produce 2,000 pairs, blending traditional techniques with Italian technology, and will sell them through select global stores and online platforms.

Beyond the product launch, Prada has introduced a three-year training program for artisans from key Kolhapuri-making regions. Conducted in collaboration with leading Indian design institutes, the initiative aims to train around 180 artisans and includes opportunities for international exposure at Prada’s academy in Italy, helping elevate Indian traditional crafts on the global stage.
