Ponniyin Selvan I : Mani Ratnam’s film delivers third-best opening in Tamil Nadu; outperforms RRR and Vikram, breaks records overseas
After releasing in theatres on Friday, Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: 1 was well-received by both audiences and reviewers. The film has enjoyed a strong start at the box office thanks to favourable reviews and years of anticipation.
The movie not only had a phenomenal opening in India, but also outside. The epic has “the Biggest Day 1 opening for a Tamil movie at the WW Box office for 2022,” according to film industry expert Ramesh Bala.
In Tamil Nadu, the movie, which is a remake of the same-named Kalki Krishnamurthy book, has brought in Rs 25.86 crore, outpacing SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. Manobala Vijayabalan, a film trade analyst, observed that “#PonniyinSelvan part 1 is off to a FANTASTIC start at the box office. The movie made $25.86 million on Day 1 in the state. third-largest debut of the year. The two movies that are in front of PS1 are Beast and Valimai (Rs 36.17 cr) (Rs 26.40 cr).
According to Box Office India, the Hindi circuit collected roughly Rs 1.75 crore. In Hindi-speaking countries, the movie faces fierce competition from Vikram Vedha, which stars Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan. On its first day, Vikram Vedha made about Rs 11.56 crore.
