Ex Kerala Home Minister And Left Veteran Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Dies At 69

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, a senior CPI(M) leader and a former Kerala Home Minister, passed away on Saturday night at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, according to party sources. He was 69. He had been having treatment for cancer for some time, they said.

Balakrishnan, a Marxist party politburo member, held the position of state secretary for the CPI(M) from 2015 until 2022. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) several times and held the positions of Minister of Home and Tourism Affairs from 2006 to 2011 under the V S Achuthanandan administration. He resigned from his position as party state secretary in August of this year due to deteriorating health.

Kerala Assembly Speaker A N Shamseer shared a photo of the departed leader in his Facebook post and said “Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts. Adieu Dear Balakrishnetta”.

Due to Balakrishnan’s serious health condition, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier in the day postponed his vacation to Europe, which was supposed to leave on Sunday.
