PM Modi to Inaugurate India’s First Nature-Themed Airport Terminal in Guwahati
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly built Integrated Terminal Building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati during his visit to Assam on December 20–21. Spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the terminal is designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and economic growth in the Northeast.
Touted as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, the design reflects Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids.” The structure incorporates around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo and features elements inspired by Kaziranga’s landscapes, traditional japi motifs, the one-horned rhinoceros, and 57 orchid-inspired columns symbolising the Kopou flower. A unique “Sky Forest” with nearly one lakh indigenous plants offers passengers an immersive, forest-like arrival experience.
The terminal is equipped with advanced, passenger-centric technologies including DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, full-body scanners, automated baggage handling systems, fast-track immigration, and AI-driven airport operations. Alongside upgrades to the runway, aprons, and taxiways, the new facility marks a major milestone in integrating Assam more closely with national and global aviation networks.
