NHAI Discontinues KYV Requirement for New FASTag Issuances from February 1

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process for four-wheelers — including cars, jeeps, and vans — will be discontinued for all new FASTag issuances starting February 1. The move is aimed at improving user convenience and eliminating delays and complications faced by motorists after FASTag activation due to post-verification procedures.

Under the revised framework, the routine post-activation KYV step will no longer be required. Existing FASTag users will also not have to undergo KYV unless a specific complaint is raised related to misuse, incorrect issuance, or tagging issues. To maintain system integrity and prevent fraud or duplication, NHAI has tightened pre-activation verification norms, making it mandatory for banks to validate vehicle details through the VAHAN database before activating any FASTag.

In cases where vehicle data is unavailable on VAHAN, issuer banks must verify registration certificate details prior to activation and will be fully responsible for the accuracy of records. The new rules — applicable to both offline and online FASTag purchases — are expected to streamline the process, enhance transparency, reduce grievances, and ensure that motorists are not contacted again for verification after activation.
