New Chief Of Defence Staff (CDS) Is Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired)

The government on Wednesday designated Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (Retired) the new Chief of Defence Staff, the nation’s top military official, nine months after General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter mishap. In May 2021, Lt. General Chauhan left his position as head of Eastern Command. He has held a number of positions and has a wealth of experience in North East and Jammu & Kashmir counterinsurgency operations.

13 people were murdered when a military helicopter crashed in Tamil Nadu in December, including General Rawat, who had served as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff. An Air Force Group Captain who was the sole survivor eventually passed away from serious burns.

In January 2020, General Rawat, 63, assumed leadership as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff. The Army, Navy, and Air Force were the three services that the job was designed to integrate.

In addition to serving as the Defence Minister’s primary military advisor and serving as the Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, the Chief of Defence Staff also serves as an impartial advisor to the political establishment.
