Meta Partners with Reliance to Launch First AI Data Centre in India
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has partnered with Reliance Industries to establish its first AI-powered data centre in India. The 168-megawatt facility, located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, will be developed by Reliance and leased by Meta, which will cover the full costs of energy and water consumption. The project marks a significant step in Meta’s global infrastructure expansion and strengthens its long-standing partnership with Reliance in connectivity, commerce, and artificial intelligence.
The agreement reinforces India’s growing position as a global hub for AI and digital infrastructure. Major technology companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and OpenAI have announced substantial investments in the country’s AI ecosystem. According to Cushman & Wakefield’s Global Data Center Market Comparison 2026 report, India is now the second-largest data centre market in the Asia-Pacific region, with 1.6 GW of operational capacity and an additional 3.1 GW under construction or in planning stages.
The new data centre project builds on years of collaboration between Meta and Reliance. Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020 and later joined Reliance in an AI-focused joint venture aimed at developing AI platforms and tools for Indian enterprises. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the Jamnagar facility as a key component of the company’s global AI infrastructure strategy, while Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani called the partnership a transformative milestone that positions India at the forefront of the global AI revolution.
