Mehli Mistry Resigns from Tata’s Small Animal Hospital Board After Exit from Tata Trusts

Mehli Mistry, a long-time confidant of Ratan Tata, has resigned from the board of Tata’s Small Animal Hospital Trust just weeks after stepping down from Tata Trusts. In his resignation letter, Mistry stated he could no longer contribute funds to the initiative, nor request support from philanthropic entities he is no longer associated with. His exit follows his removal from both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) last month.

Despite his departure from the key Tata Trusts, Mistry continues to serve on the Tata Education and Development Trust, which operates under the Sir Ratan Tata Trust headed by Noel Tata. However, he emphasised that without formal ties to SDTT and SRTT, he cannot support the Small Animal Hospital Trust financially. His decision comes amid tensions between him and other trustees, including Noel Tata, which culminated in his ouster in late October after a three-year tenure.

The Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai was founded by Tata Trusts to elevate the standards of veterinary care in India, inspired by Ratan Tata’s personal experience seeking advanced medical treatment for his pet. Meanwhile, Tata Trusts continue to restructure their leadership. Earlier in November, the SDTT board approved the induction of Bhaskar Bhat and Neville Tata—moves seen as consolidating Noel Tata’s influence. The Tata Trusts collectively hold a 66% stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group.
