Manipur CM Biren Singh Apologises for Ongoing Violence, Vows Normalcy by 2025

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a public apology for the ongoing violence in the state since May 2023, which has claimed around 200 lives and displaced thousands. Addressing the humanitarian crisis, he expressed regret and assured citizens of progress toward peace, stating, “I believe by 2025, normalcy will be restored.” Singh highlighted government efforts, including the recovery of 5,600 arms, arrest of 625 accused, and provision of funds for displaced families and reconstruction.

The violence in Manipur erupted over ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, triggered by a court ruling suggesting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meiteis. The decision faced fierce opposition from Kuki-Zo tribal groups, fearing it would undermine their rights. The conflict has resulted in widespread arson, vandalism, and displacement, with both communities suffering severe losses, including damage to places of worship.

The Indian government has deployed significant military resources, imposed curfews, and issued shoot-at-sight orders in affected areas to curb the unrest. The Meiteis, who constitute 53% of Manipur’s population and reside in the Imphal Valley, and the tribals, including Kukis and Nagas inhabiting the hills, remain at the heart of the ongoing ethnic conflict.
