Lionel Messi arrived in Kolkata in the early hours of Saturday as part of the much-anticipated GOAT India Tour 2025, triggering massive celebrations among football fans. Supporters gathered past midnight at the airport, waving Argentina flags, wearing No.10 jerseys, and capturing the moment on their phones as the global icon was escorted through tight security to his hotel. The city remained on high alert with heavy police deployment and surveillance around key locations.
Messi is accompanied by his long-time strike partner Luis Suárez and Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul. Kolkata is the first stop of his three-day India tour, which will also cover Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. His itinerary includes meetings with chief ministers, corporate leaders, and celebrities, culminating in an audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Fans thronged the Hyatt Regency, where vendors sold Messi merchandise, turning the area into a festive hub.
The football legend will begin his Kolkata engagements with a sponsors’ meet, followed by a grand tribute event at Salt Lake Stadium featuring cultural performances and an exhibition match. Messi will interact with young footballers, felicitate Bengal’s Santosh Trophy-winning team, conduct a special masterclass for children, and take a lap of honour. A virtual unveiling of his 70-foot statue will further mark his historic visit before he heads to the next leg of the tour.
