Lawyer Attempts to Attack Chief Justice B.R. Gavai in Supreme Court Over Remarks on Hindu Deity
A tense moment unfolded in India’s Supreme Court on Monday when a lawyer attempted to hurl what appeared to be a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. The incident reportedly stemmed from the judge’s recent comments in a separate case involving a damaged statue of the Hindu god Vishnu. During that hearing, Gavai had remarked that the petitioner “should go and ask the deity himself to do something,” before rejecting the plea — a comment that later drew backlash.
Security personnel quickly intervened as the lawyer approached the Chief Justice’s bench, stopping him before the object could be thrown. According to LiveLaw, it was unclear whether the item was a shoe or a rolled paper. As he was being escorted out, the man shouted, “We will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan Dharma.” Gavai, who is set to retire next month, calmly asked the court to continue proceedings.
The Supreme Court Advocates-on-record Association condemned the incident, calling it “antithetical to the dignity of the legal profession.” Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta attributed the episode to misinformation circulating on social media, noting that Chief Justice Gavai has shown reverence toward all religions. Last month, Gavai clarified that his earlier remarks were misconstrued and reaffirmed his respect for every faith.
