IndiGo Slapped with ₹58.75 Crore Tax Penalty as DGCA Suspends Senior Safety Officials

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has received a tax penalty notice of ₹58.75 crore from the Additional Commissioner of CGST, Delhi South Commissionerate, for the financial year 2020–21, the carrier said on Friday. The development adds to mounting troubles for the airline, which has been dealing with operational disruptions throughout December.

Earlier in the day, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended four senior Flight Operations Inspectors—Sanjay Brahamane, Amit Gupta, Kapil Manglik and Lokesh Rampal—pending a detailed investigation. The four-member panel has been tasked with identifying the root causes of widespread operational issues affecting IndiGo’s services, including compliance gaps in pilot training and safety oversight.

The airline’s ongoing crisis has resulted in mass cancellations and severe delays, with over a thousand flights cancelled in the past ten days. Bengaluru Airport alone saw more than 50 cancellations on Friday. The disruptions began after the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules came into force on November 1, mandating longer rest hours and stricter duty limits for crew. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, addressing Parliament, warned that strict action would be taken, stressing that no airline—regardless of size—will be permitted to inconvenience passengers.
