IndiGo Raises Pilot Allowances After Mass Flight Cancellations to Boost Morale
IndiGo has announced an increase in allowances for its pilots, effective January 1, aiming to improve morale after a month marked by severe operational disruptions. The decision follows the cancellation of nearly 4,500 flights earlier this month, which stranded thousands of passengers and placed the airline under intense scrutiny from regulators. IndiGo currently commands about 65% of India’s domestic aviation market and employs nearly 5,000 pilots nationwide.
Under the revised structure, layover allowances for captains will rise from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, while first officers will receive Rs 1,500 instead of Rs 1,000. Deadheading allowances have also been increased, with captains now eligible for Rs 4,000 and first officers for Rs 2,000. The changes were communicated internally by Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President – Flight Operations, and come after company leadership engaged directly with pilots across multiple bases.
The cancellations triggered government intervention, including a temporary relaxation of night duty norms to stabilise operations, a move criticised by pilot unions over safety and welfare concerns. Meanwhile, a DGCA-appointed committee has submitted a confidential report on the disruptions to the civil aviation ministry. Rating agency Moody’s has warned of potential financial strain on IndiGo due to refunds, penalties, and reputational impact, even as competition for pilots intensifies amid aggressive hiring by foreign airlines.
