PM Modi Consults Economists as Budget 2026 Preparations Reach Final Stage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet leading economists and sectoral experts today as part of the government’s final-stage preparations for Union Budget 2026. The consultation, set for 11 am, is aimed at gathering expert inputs before key economic decisions are finalised for the next financial year, according to senior government officials. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to present the Budget on February 1.

Senior officials from NITI Aayog, including Vice Chairman Suman Bery and CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, will also be present at the meeting. Economists are expected to share assessments of the current economic environment and suggest priority areas for growth and policy focus. The Budget exercise comes amid global economic uncertainty, including geopolitical tensions and the impact of higher US tariffs on Indian exports.

Earlier this month, the government expanded the consultation process by inviting public suggestions for Budget 2026–27 through the MyGov platform. Finance Minister Sitharaman has already held multiple rounds of pre-Budget meetings in New Delhi with economists, farmer groups, MSMEs, industry representatives, financial sector stakeholders, labour unions, and other key sectors, underlining a broad-based approach to shaping the upcoming Budget.
