IndiGo Hits Record Market Share as Air India Scales Back
IndiGo achieved its highest-ever market share in June, reaching 66.3%, according to the latest DGCA data. The airline carried 89.2 lakh passengers during the month, further strengthening its dominance in India’s domestic aviation market, while Air India’s share fell to 23.9%.
Air India carried 3.2 million passengers in June, its lowest monthly figure this year, after announcing capacity cuts across both domestic and international operations. The Tata Group-owned carrier said the reductions are part of a network rationalisation plan that will continue until the end of August, with suspended services expected to gradually return from September. Flights to Chicago and Washington are likely to remain suspended due to aircraft availability constraints.
Meanwhile, Akasa Air increased its market share to 6.4%, its strongest performance so far, and reported the highest passenger load factor of 92.2%. Indian airlines have also been dealing with geopolitical disruptions, particularly in the Middle East, where capacity was sharply reduced earlier this year, affecting carriers that rely heavily on Gulf routes for international revenue.
