Indian Steelmakers Shift Focus to Domestic Market
Indian steel manufacturers are increasingly focusing on the domestic market as exports to Europe and the UK are expected to decline following tighter import regulations. Industry executives estimate shipments to these markets could fall by as much as 40% this fiscal year, prompting companies to look for stronger demand within India.
However, the strategy faces challenges from low-cost Chinese steel imports, which are significantly cheaper than domestic products and are putting pressure on Indian producers’ profit margins. The Indian government has launched an anti-dumping investigation into imports of hot-rolled steel from China, Japan, and Russia, while industry leaders have called for measures to ensure fair competition.
Despite global trade headwinds, India remains one of the fastest-growing steel markets, supported by rising infrastructure spending and strong domestic demand. Major producers such as Tata Steel and JSW Steel continue to expand capacity in the country, while also exploring export opportunities in East Asia and the Middle East to offset declining shipments to Europe.
